Faïence Ponchon

The first FAÏENCE PONCHON wall tile factory was founded in 1824. 8 factories followed in this village in Oise, France, at the end of the clay seam called “the Pays de Bray buttonhole”.

The peak of production was in the second half of the 19th century, when taps were installed on sinks and the Haussmann buildings in Paris made this activity flourish. The tiles are hand-decorated with floral motifs or characteristic geometrical compositions. The traditional cobalt blue and manganese colours are today complemented by a number of shades.

These Ponchon tiles are present throughout the world, and can be found in France, in Monet’s house in Giverny, in Emile Zola’s house in Medan, in Pierre Auguste Renoir’s house in Essoyes, in the castle of Vaux Le Vicomte and even in Uruguay at the Museo del azulejo…
